When I see a photo that captures my imagination, amazes me, or makes me think – I always want to know the story behind the photo – how it was made, why it was made, what was going through photographer’s mind when he created it.

Yes, I know, “photograph speaks for itself”, and for the viewer in me just looking at the photograph is enough, but the photographer in me always wants to know more.

One of the best photography web sites out there is 1x.com. Recently they created a new section – tutorials! In that section photographers whose photos passed the 1x.com selection process, and were published, can write tutorials how they created their works of art. It is something I was dreaming of!

Each tutorial has 6 sections. Lets go over them:

1. Context – In this section photographer writes about what led him to create the photo, what went through his mind.

2. The Picture – Here photographer explains how he took the photo, why he used that specific equipment, how he chose time of day, lighting etc.

3. Processing – This part is all about post-processing: how the photo was post processed and why, what programs were used. Decisions regarding cropping of the photo are also explained here.

4. Outcome – In this section photographer talks about how he sees the final photo. Did it meet his expectations? What he could’ve done to improve it (if at all).

5. Three Hints – Here photographer basically shares his wisdom. He gives three pieces of advice to his fellow photographers. I found here many gems, which gave me a great deal of inspiration.

6. Biography / Additional info – Here photographer tells a little more about himself as much or as little as he wants. In this section photographer can also add any additional information that he feels necessary.

I think that creating the tutorial section was a great idea, and any photographer can benefit from it!

You can find it here: http://1x.com/#!/tutorials

I always wanted to create a nice looking portfolio to showcase my photographs, but every time I tried, I didn’t really like the result. Most of the times it was due to lack of sufficient time to work on the design. I had to do everything myself because I couldn’t afford to hire web-designer.

This time I had a little more time, and I also found a partial solution – after a few hours spent in search I bought a premium WordPress theme that I liked, and then tweaked it to look exactly as I want. So most of the design was ready, and I had only to perform minor changes.

You can view my portfolio either by clicking on the link “Portfolio” which is located above the top banner of the blog, or clicking here.

I would really like to know what you think. Any constructive comments would be appreciated!

Till the next time, take care!

For those of you who are not familiar with 1x.com, it is one of the best photography sites out there. The photos displayed on that site are carefully selected by jury of several people. I personally visit it for inspiration and simple joy of looking at magnificent photography.

People that run 1x.com have created compilation of their best photographs, and joined them to form a very unique photo book – “In Pursuit Of The Sublime”.

They started shipping it from the beginning of November. This book is priced at $79 and worldwide shipping adds $20 to the cost. They also give 3 months bronze membership at 1x.com to all buyers of the book.

One more interesting detail is that you can view all the images that are included in the book online! This way you’ll know exactly what are you buying.

After having a look at all the images included in this magnificent book I am struggling with a strong urge to buy it. The cost is too expensive for me though, but who knows, I might just not be able to constrain myself

In any case you should definitely give it a look and if you like the images, you can buy the book here.

Cheers,

Greg.

For two days now I am watching the live workshop with David Duchemin called “Vision Driven Photography” and I am fascinated by it!

Actually only recently I discovered the creativeLIVE website. What they do there is they have workshops, or classes with some fascinating people and broadcast them live. During the live broadcast anyone can watch the workshop for free, and they make it financially possible by recording these classes on HD video and selling them. And after watching this workshop with David Duchemin I can say that these workshops are really worth buying too.

This workshop with David Duchemin for example is divided into three days, one session each day. And the guys at creativeLIVE are pretty amazing – in between the session they repeatedly broadcast the recorded session also for free! So you don’t have to watch it at exact time it is live, you can do it at any time of the day.

If you read this post at the day that it is posted you can still watch the remaining parts of the workshop for free – just click on the link above

David Duchemin is a great photographer. You can see his work at www.pixelatedimage.com and he also has written several e-books, some of which after seeing his workshop I’m definitely going to buy (on his web site they cost only $5 each!).

If you are not familiar with David Duchemin’s work, I recommend visiting his web site, and soon I’ll post reviews of his ebooks that I’ll purchase.
